10 Commandments of Search Engine Optimsation (SEO)

1) Thou shall keep their key focus on Contents

This is the key factor to keep your site ranking high on search engines. Contents as always are King which attracts search engines to your site. You have to give search engines a reason to rank your website at the top. It's not all about linking, blogging, or even buying lots of inbound links. It's more about having relevant & keyword rich contents on your site.

2) Thou shall target Keywords within Contents

While writing contents for your website, you need to keep a focus around the keywords you wish to optimise for Search Engines. Avoid using words that may be similar to what you do, but are not going to be searchable. For eg. rather than using words like 'Accountancy' in your website if you're an Accountant, you should add words like 'Accountants' which is a keyword most likely to be searched if someone is looking for an Accountant.

3) Thou shall target Demographics within Contents

It's important to mention demographics for the area/s you are targeting. So if you're an Accountant in Melbourne, then focus your keywords around these words.

4) Thou shall have relevant & clear Web Page structure

You need to make clear to search engines regarding the page you're optimising. So make sure you code the site with its meta tags (this may not influence search engine ranking). Make sure your page is well structured, focus around the products or services you offer. Avoid dynamic urls and focus on static urls. Make sure your site is good from a usability and/or accessibility perspective.

5) Thou shall Build Quality Links with Good Neighbourhood

The old saying of don't mingle with bad neighbours and stay with the good ones. The same applies to websites. Linking to good quality websites will eventually give your website a boost to some extent.

6) Thou shall keep your website legible to web spider or robots

Make websites that are search engine friendly (SEF), or where search engine spiders can read through your contents. In the recent past, contents like Flash based websites or images could not be legible by search engine spiders. If for some reason you have to use a Flash site for a presentation, that's ok, as long as you also have a parallel text-based web pages on similar contents for spiders to read and understand what your products or services are about. Having said that, it is believed that Google has made inroads in indexing dynamic contents like PDF (portable document format) and Flash files. Adobe has been working along with Google & Yahoo to make its Flash file format searchable.

7) Thou shall Blog

Blogs are another way to give search engines & visitors or consumers more information about your website and what you do. This eventually gives boost to your website. It is a good practice to keep blogging. This allows your readers to get updated information through blogs and it also opens up another communication channel with potential customers or visitors.

8) Thou shall design websites predominantly for Humans

With all the focus on SEO one tends to forget that the website is mainly designed for humans and not only for search engines. However there has to be a balance to please both, humans & search engines. So in essence, if you're aware of how to design your website for search engines, then the users will get a chance to find it and eventually browse through your site. Nevertheless, your focus on writing the contents and maintaining the information flow on the site should be planned efficiently for humans, which will also give search engines a good understanding about your site.

9) Thou shall not stuff websites with Keywords

This is a big No No. Stuffing your site with Keywords can be detrimental. Even adding too many internal links with certain keywords may be unethical & alarming to search engines. Search Engines are smart enough in picking up repetitive keywords or unnecessary internal linking and could even ban your site from its index.

10) Thou shall not buy inbound links from link exchange sites or non-relevant sites

Although at times buying inbound links may work for some sites, but we do not suggest doing this, unless if you create inbound links from a quality & content-relevant website.
